Their operation attracted criticism from\u00a0some marine experts who said it was unlikely to succeed and would cause the severely weakened whale more distress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"placeholder-image master_landscape big\"><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"76978329\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/76978329_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"People help a stranded humpback whale into a barge during rescue efforts organised by a private initiative in shallow waters of the Baltic Sea off the island of Poel, near Wismar\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/><figcaption class=\"img-caption\">A much-vaunted private barge rescue attempt at the end of April was considered a long shot from the outset, given the whale&#8217;s ailing condition [FILE: April 28, 2026]<small class=\"copyright\">Image: Schwarck\/NonstopNews\/REUTERS<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The plan saw the\u00a0animal\u00a0put into a water-filled barge and towed to the North Sea, where it was\u00a0released on May 2.<\/p>\n<p>A whale carcass was then spotted off Denmark&#8217;s Anholt island on May 14.<\/p>\n<p>The case has received national media coverage in Germany,\u00a0where it has captivated the public for weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Danish Environmental Protection Agency said that while it understood &#8220;the considerable public interest in this particular whale,&#8221; people should keep a safe distance and refrain from approaching it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is because the whale may carry diseases that can also be transmitted to humans, and there may also be a risk of explosion,&#8221; as decomposition creates large volumes of gases.<\/p>\n<p><span data-slot-id=\"Article_InContent-1\" class=\"rich-text-ad\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>How have German\u00a0authorities reacted to the news of Timmy&#8217;s death?<\/h2>\n<p>The state of\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/mecklenburg-western-pomerania\/t-18968236\">Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania<\/a>&#8216;s environment minister, Till Backhaus, thanked\u00a0Danish authorities for their assistance in identifying the whale.<\/p>\n<p>He also again defended his decision, defying the advice of some of his state&#8217;s expert marine life groups, to allow the private rescue attempt.\u00a0He said it was sad that the whale had not been able to &#8220;seize its slim chance&#8221; at survival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I consider it completely human to make use of even the slimmest of chances, when a life is at stake. Whoever wishes to criticize that may do so,&#8221; Backhaus, who at the time had\u00a0boasted of how the controversial rescue mission had &#8220;saved&#8221; the creature, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was always about weighing the balance between which option was the worst:\u00a0Waiting for the certain death of the animal as it suffered, or giving him a last chance and exposing him to potential stress
