Panerai combines a high-tech carbon-composite case with familiar vintage-inspired details in the new Luminor Marina PAM01707. The watch uses the brand’s proprietary Carbotech material for its 44mm cushion case. Paired with an automatic movement and 300m water resistance, it remains every bit the capable tool watch expected from the Luminor Marina family.

What makes this release particularly interesting is its blend of old and new. The cutting-edge case contrasts sharply with the dial details inspired by 1960s Panerai watches. Beige lume accents mimic the warm patina that naturally developed on tritium-filled hands and markers over decades. Collectors came to love these “tropical” tones, but modern luminous compounds age far more gracefully. As a result, brands often recreate the look using contemporary materials rather than waiting half a century or more for nature to take its course.

The PAM01707 achieves that effect with beige Super-LumiNova on its hands and markers. More interestingly, the oversized Arabic numerals and baton indexes are not applied. Instead, they are cut directly into the matte-black dial. These stencil-style openings reveal a luminous disc beneath, allowing a wider Super-LumiNova base to absorb light and deliver a brighter, longer-lasting green glow.

Balancing this vintage aesthetic is one of Panerai’s most modern case materials. Introduced in 2015, Carbotech combines compressed layers of carbon fiber with PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone), a high-performance polymer that reinforces the structure. The result is an exceptionally lightweight composite with impressive rigidity. Panerai cites the material as 80% lighter than steel and significantly lighter than titanium while maintaining excellent strength. Carbotech also offers strong corrosion resistance and is hypoallergenic, making it particularly well suited to everyday wear.

Visually, the material remains one of Panerai’s most distinctive creations. The layering process creates unique grain patterns throughout the case, producing an effect reminiscent of ebony wood. No two cases look exactly alike, giving each watch a unique character.

Wearability and performance

All that technology results in a watch weighing just 100 grams, which feels almost unbelievable for a 44 × 14.5mm case. That weight even includes one of the two supplied straps. Panerai pairs the PAM01707 with a vintage-style brown calfskin strap featuring beige stitching, complemented by a second black rubber strap. However, only one DLC-coated titanium trapezoidal buckle is included, so owners must swap it between straps using the supplied screwdriver.

Unlike the steel Luminor Marina models, the Carbotech version does not receive Panerai’s quick-release strap system. Instead, you’ll need a trusty spring-bar tool for strap changes. If I were to buy this watch, I’d fit the rubber strap immediately and leave the leather option safely tucked away until cooler months.

Despite the specifications, trying the watch on is essential. The dimensions sound substantial, but the lightweight case and matte black finish go some way in reducing its presence on the wrist. It wears differently than the numbers suggest, while still delivering that macho tool-watch feel.

Power comes from Panerai’s in-house automatic P.9010 caliber. The movement uses an Incabloc shock-protection system among its 200 components and delivers a 72-hour power reserve from twin barrels. An all-titanium case back with a black DLC coating conceals the movement. Unlike many recent Luminor Marina models, this watch omits a date window, giving the dial a cleaner, more symmetrical appearance.

Final specs, thoughts, and pricing

That symmetry is slightly offset by the small-seconds display at 9 o’clock. Viewed in isolation, the layout can feel a touch left-heavy. But when considered alongside the signature crown-protecting bridge at 3 o’clock, the balance makes much more sense. The arrangement also allows the prominent “Luminor Marina” and “Panerai” text to remain uncluttered.

For me, the PAM01707 succeeds because it avoids feeling overly vintage or overly technical. The faux-aged lume could have felt forced, yet the stark Carbotech case keeps the watch firmly rooted in the present. It’s an appealing mix of old-school Panerai design and modern engineering.
